Welcome to the Baptist Health South Florida Athletic Training Residency located in Miami, Florida. This program will welcome our first class August 2022.
The goal of this one-year residency is to provide Athletic Trainers with advanced training in orthopedic sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, with exposure to a broad-spectrum of upper and lower extremity conditions. Residents will be active in the clinical practice as an Athletic Trainer, as well as observing in the operating room during procedures. Baptist Health Athletic Training residents will gain robust knowledge and experience in the clinic, operating room, and research setting within a high volume, multi-specialty orthopedic practice.
Outside of the operating room, residents care for a wide variety of patients and work hand-in-hand with fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopedic surgeons and Certified Athletic Trainer preceptors within Baptist Health Orthopedic Care.
During clinic, faculty and residents are supported by allied health professionals including a dedicated surgical coordinator, physician assistants, medical assistants, and X-Ray techs. Within the practice, there are also doctoral-trained personnel, certified clinical research coordinators and students who support the residents with their research duties.

Participation in ongoing clinical and basic science research projects is encouraged and protected time for these scholarly activities is built into the weekly schedule. The program has access to a dedicated research staff that is available to assist on all projects. Didactic learning includes 3 weekly sessions on sports medicine, orthopedic foot and ankle, and orthopedic hand conference covering a broad range of topics from basic science to pathophysiology and the latest surgical advancements. Residents will also participate in a monthly journal club and case presentations. Finally, residents have year-round access to our on-site cadaveric BioSkills training lab to gain exposure to surgical skills.

The nationally recognized Baptist Health Orthopedic Institute is a multi-site practice with locations across South Florida, offering comprehensive orthopedic services including sports medicine, foot and ankle, hand, adult reconstruction and trauma care to community members and professional athletes. Doctors Hospital, located in the heart of historic Coral Gables, has provided high-quality medical care since 1949. The 281-bed, acute care facility is recognized for its services in orthopedics, sports medicine, general surgery, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, geriatrics, intensive care and a state-of-the-art Emergency Department.
Miami HEAT Sports Medicine Center
The Miami HEAT Sports Medicine Center is a new, state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center located in the Medical Arts Building at Doctors Hospital. It is fully dedicated to orthopedic procedures and includes 4,500 square feet of the world’s most advanced and efficient operating room suites. Two of the four operating rooms have windows for viewing capabilities and student observation.
